Like many churches in the UK, attendance at our evening service has in recent years been poor. Rather than cancel the evening service altogether, the Elders have decided to do something different. The overiding concern our Pastor has, is that we encourage our congregation to dig deeper into God's Word and learn to apply it to our daily lives. So, from March 2022, we have the following to offer on Sunday evenings:
we have an intimate Breaking of Bread service, led by the Elders. We encourage the congregation to practice the Apostle Paul's instruction to the Corinthian church:
"When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up" (1 Corinthians 14:26 - ESV)
We want to encourage the congregation to be contributors when they come to a worship service, not just consumers.
we do Café Church. We come together informally and have something to eat or maybe just a hot drink before singing a couple of worship songs to bind us together in our worship to God. A short 10-minute message is then shared before breaking out into smaller groups to discuss and ask questions, with a particular emphasis on applying what has been preached to our individual lives. At the end of the evening we all come back together to share what we have learned or to ask some of the bigger questions which we still need answers to!
On the last Sunday of the month, our Café Church takes on a twist and we "Grill-a-Pastor", putting any question we might have to our Pastor, Tim Bodman (with the help of his Elders!). No question is considered off limits, but always with a desire to get to grips with any aspect of our faith in order to be more effective as disciples of the Lord Jesus.
